IGA: Putting Moms to Work

We are helping mothers in Ethiopia support their children by training them and providing start up materials to begin their own businesses. These income generating activities (IGA) will allow them to make meaningful contributions to their household income.

The Business

Food Processing

Spices are a staple of the Ethiopian diet. The Food Processing business will involve preparing blends of red pepper, ginger, garlic, cinnamon and other spices to make Berbera powder. It takes five days to prepare the powder. The powder is able to be sold to individuals and restaurants. 

Each injera business will cost $325 USD to start. This cost will cover the start up supplies as well as rent for a location to prepare / sell the product from. The mothers will also receive professional business training.

My current monthly household income is $31 USD. There are two people living in my household. I am struggling to support my family because there is no access to jobs that pay enough. I want to start a business.

My current monthly household income is $33 USD. There are 3 people living in my household. I am struggling to support my family as a daily laborer and have no funds to start up a business on my own.

My current household income is $18 USD. There are three people living in my household. I work as a cleaner to support my family but am unable to earn enough income. I hope to earn $165 USD after six months of business.

I am currently unemployed. There are two people living in my household. I am very unhappy because life is difficult without work and I cannot support my young daughter. I know her life will improve if I can earn an income.
