There are countless ways that Blessing the Children ministers to the community of Debre Zeyit, Ethiopia. Some of the outreaches you may consider are listed below.
Work one-on-one or in groups of any size with children of all ages from preschool to high school. Activities may be held on the BCI Academy campus or at a local church and can range from several hours to a full day with a meal.
Activities led by previous missionaries have included bonfires, reading groups, arts and crafts, and character development workshops.
Work with any age group of your choosing. Organize a pick up game or a fun competition. There is plenty of space for indoor or outdoor activities on the campus of the BCI Academy.
Key needs include teaching spoken English and tutoring students. Those planning to teach English should prepare lesson plans and bring any worksheets or supplies needed. There are great resources for teaching English as a Second Language online. Arrangements can be made for tutoring students outside of school hours to help those who are struggling, particularly with English.
Our social workers will identify families in great need who match your interests and skill set, whether this be putting a roof on a house, teaching mothers how to treat basic wounds, helping girls overcome fear and shame associated with the stigma of menstruation, or any number of needs.
No church leadership experience is needed. If you can pray with people, you can serve in this capacity. You may choose to focus your work on any group that matches your calling, whether it be children, widows, men, pastoral staff, or any combination of these.
Many of the caretakers are widowed mothers left to care for their children with no support or income. They need encouragement, education and hope. The needs are vast and include skill training, child rearing, and more.
Serve daily meals at the BCI Academy or assist in a community feeding day. Invite men, women, and children from the poorest areas of Debre Zeyit to the campus of the BCI Academy and serve a warm meal. You may include music, prayer, and devotionals with the meal to pour into the lives of people who need hope and salvation.
In addition to screening and treatments, healthcare education is needed on a number of topics, including sanitation, menstruation, and prevention and treatment of infections. Basic items like gloves, Band-Aids, gauze and antibiotic creams are always in demand and it is helpful if you can pack some of these items in your suitcase. You do not need to be a medical professional to help in many of these areas.
There is no shortage of people in need on the streets of Debre Zeyit who will graciously accept any kindness you can extend to them. You will be accompanied by a staff member who will serve as a translator / guide.
The children and families will feel honored to invite you into their homes and will welcome being prayed over.
